When the brief for a historic Glaswegian property came across our desk, it didn’t ask for something standard; it required a fully bespoke approach. One shaped by a clear understanding of how design and craftsmanship come together; a space where SWD thrives.
This unique project centres around a standout feature: a series of bespoke bronze arched doors, known internally as the birdcage. The design is both intricate and awe-inspiring; with carefully bevelled glazing that introduces depth across the surface, softening direct light and allowing it to move more gently through the surrounding spaces. This arched detailing is echoed in the unmissable Emperador brown marble surround, where the stone has been expertly shaped to frame the opening. The result is a centrepiece that doesn’t just anchor the design, it defines the space.
Developed in collaboration with Laura Hammett, the brief called for a collection of bespoke doors that could carry the aesthetic appeal of classical design whilst also remaining functional enough for the demands of day-to-day family life. The initial inspiration was drawn from the entrance of the Bvlgari London flagship store, where Italian classicism is interpreted through an English architectural lens. This influence can be seen in the use of symmetry and repeated detailing, which together build an unmistakable visual language that carries throughout every space.
Before a single room is seen, the front door says everything. High-gloss, commanding and precise, it sets a standard that the rest of the home is built to meet. Inside, dark bronze hardware carries that promise forward, threading through the interior against lighter walls and panelling with a contrast that feels both bold and intentional.
The bespoke Crittall-style doors in the living area carry the same arched framework and precise bevelling as the main feature; but where the centrepiece commands, these doors invite. Light moves through them freely, defining each space without ever closing it off. Further into the home, the bespoke cellar door continues the conversation with sculpted curves, matching bevel details and light catching every edge; no corner of the home is treated as an afterthought.
This project reflects SWD’s bespoke approach at its most resolved; where every element has been designed to work as part of a greater whole. The result is a home that is defined not by individual pieces, but by the carefully curated relationship between them.
Projects like this begin with a brief; but every element that you see was conceived and crafted by SWD. Each considered detail and complementary finish contributes to the creation of a new story; defined by craftsmanship and the moments that will unfold beyond each threshold.
